Organization Description
The Helena Education Foundation (HEF) is a nonprofit educational foundation started in 2001 to support, enhance and promote public education in the Helena area. HEF currently employs a full-time executive director in addition to this position. The Board of Directors is a community board.
Summary
The Deputy Director is responsible for Helena Education Foundation’s fundraising efforts by creating numerous, efficient and compelling opportunities for donors to support the organization and make the experience of giving satisfying and rewarding. The Deputy Director will help the organization create and grow an organized, comprehensive and diverse donor base and increase grants, planned giving, and contributions from annual and major donors, parents, and staff. The Deputy Director is also responsible for coordinating all program events and activities, supporting the work of the executive director.
Primary Responsibilities
Development Direction: Plans, directs and implements a comprehensive development program that generates individual donors, foundation, philanthropic and corporate support.
- Plans fundraising campaigns and activities, including two annual fundraising appeals, planned giving, event and program sponsorships, major donor giving and corporate and foundation grants
- Manages fund-raising campaigns and activities
- Produces solicitation materials and trains and organizes Board members for fundraising efforts
- Identifies, solicits, recognizes and stewards donors and prospects including written and electronic communications
- Incorporates advancements in development activities that are pertinent to raising money within the community and to the organization’s mission and programs
- Works with the Executive Director in creating a long-term development strategy including legacy gifting, endowments, and future funding to support the work of HEF.
Program and Event Coordination: Organizes, manages and monitors details of all events and programs
Communications: Works to ensure strong communications across all program areas to strengthen HEF’s overall effectiveness
- Collaborates with the executive director and Board to gather stories and statistics that demonstrate the organization’s work in the schools and community
- Represents HEF at public events, conferences, workshops and media events as requested
- Communicates accurately and effectively with the ED and Board regarding all aspects of the fundraising and programs including data, reports, and other information to the executive director as needed.
- Promotes events, programs, and activities through traditional and social media platforms, including photographing events.
- Manages production of materials for fundraising and programs including coordinating with designer, printing, and effective distribution.
Management: Performs general management responsibilities, including annual plans, budgets, reports, and evaluation and oversight of gift and program tracking
- Creates and maintains an office system to support all development and programmatic projects and operations, including management of databases, records, files, donation processing, pledge reminders and gift acknowledgement
- Prepare annual development plan in relation to corresponding budget outlining revenue and expenses; monitors progress against goals and produces monthly reports. Contribute to program updates for the board
- Attends monthly board meetings

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree desirable, with a minimum of three years of experience in fund development
- Passion for public education
- Strong knowledge of principles, ethics, and practices of successful fundraising and nonprofit operations
- Demonstrated success in securing major and annual gifts from individuals and corporations
- Demonstrated success in meeting annual fund goals, development management, grant writing, sponsorships and special events
- Goal-oriented, persistent and persuasive in the contact, follow-through and completion of acquiring donor gifts
- Demonstrated success in developing effective working relationships
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Ability to lead multiple long-term and short-term projects simultaneously; ability to work unsupervised and make decisions and solve problems independently
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about the mission and programs of HEF
- Demonstrated track record with respect to detail orientation and accuracy
- Understands and maintains the confidences of all stakeholders including donors
- Computer literacy and competency with proficiency in electronic donor tracking systems and electronic communication and event planning, as well as social media platforms, word processing, and Excel.
- Ability to maintain a high level of discretion and confidentiality in all levels of work.
Hours
Full time salaried position requires some variable hours including evenings and weekend work to facilitate program efforts.
Physical Requirements
Requires sitting at a computer for up to 8 hrs/day. Ability to relocate 30 pounds, manage display equipment and event materials.
Salary and Benefits
Salary starts at $60,000-65,000 depending on experience. Benefits include retirement contributions through Simplified Employee Pension Individual Retirement Arrangement, monthly health care reimbursement stipend, and generous PTO.
