Each week, four social skills classes will receive structured instruction in card and dice games led by the school psychologist and a special education teacher. Students will learn solitaire, competitive two-player, and cooperative games to practice self-regulation, turn-taking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Games will be explicitly taught, modeled, and practiced with guided reflection connecting gameplay to real-world social skills. At year’s end, each student will take home a new deck of cards, dice, and a folder containing all game rules to support continued practice at home and over the summer.
Grant funds will be used to purchase 96 multi-colored decks of playing cards ($176), assorted dice ($18), dice trays ($68), and individual student folders for game rules ($25). A dedicated classroom set of cards and dice will allow students to use assigned materials during lessons. Instruction will include viewing a brief gameplay video, observing the school psychologist and special education teacher model the game, and then practicing independently or in small groups. At year’s end, students will receive a deck of cards, dice, and a folder containing all game rules.
The project will begin upon receipt of materials and continue through the school year. Currently, staff are using personal and donated card decks to teach limited games. This grant will expand instruction to include solitaire and two-player games and increase access to consistent, high-quality materials.
This program supports students with emotional regulation difficulties and significant social skill deficits by providing structured, predictable opportunities to practice social interaction in a low-risk, engaging format. Card and dice games naturally teach turn-taking, patience, flexibility, and coping with winning and losing, while also strengthening emotional awareness and self-control. Cooperative games promote communication, perspective-taking, and problem-solving, while solitaire games build frustration tolerance and independent regulation skills. By offering meaningful, screen-free activities, the program expands students’ social options beyond technology, increasing opportunities for positive peer and family interaction both in and out of school.

This project will implement Bal-A-Vis-X and structured cross-lateral movement activities to intentionally build executive functioning skills, including attention, self-regulation, and motor coordination. By strengthening these foundational skills, students will be better equipped to engage in instruction and function successfully in the classroom. The use of beanbags, balls and balance boards will increase time spent on-tasks and student participation, by reducing disruptions and give students the tools they need to be active learners.
Executive functioning refers to a set of skills that include attention, planning and organization, task initiation, emotional regulation, and self-monitoring. These skills are foundational to academic learning and must be developed before academic progress can occur. Remaining seated, beginning tasks independently, and maintaining focus during challenging work all rely on strong executive functioning. Research indicates that cross-lateral movements (activities that cross the body’s midline by alternating hands and legs) engage both hemispheres of the brain and promote bilateral coordination, which is closely connected to executive functioning skills. Through the implementation of the Bal-A-Vis-X program, students will intentionally build these skills through short, structured movement sessions designed to help them regulate their bodies, settle their attention, and prepare for learning. Bal-A-Vis-X also allows for meaningful integration with academic instruction. Rhythmic ball-bouncing activities can be used to reinforce math facts, while beanbag tossing can support phonics instruction through syllabication and word segmentation. I have teamed up with school PTs who have used these programs and they will provide teacher training to expand access by implementing the program across the entire third grade, ensuring that all students benefit from increased movement, cross-lateral practice, and the team-building that naturally occurs during group sessions. Funds will be used to purchase beanbags and balls directly from the BAVX site as to maintain consistent weight. Because this program has been used in the district, we were able to find enough supplies that were not being used to purchase fewer. I am also requesting a balance board for each classroom as well as a tunnel that will be shared. In addition, as fine motor improves and we are able to transfer focus to handwriting, I hope to get pencil grips. One type as intervention, the other as support for the entire class. All materials will be purchased immediately.
When asked to reflect, students frequently share that they do their best learning in a calm, quiet, and comfortable classroom environment. For many, however, achieving this is nearly impossible. Some students struggle to regulate their bodies and attention, becoming easily distracted (and distracting others) particularly when academic tasks feel challenging. By dedicating just five minutes at the beginning of a lesson to structured Bal-A-Vis-X activities, instructional time is ultimately preserved through fewer interruptions, redirections, and behavioral resets throughout the lesson. Through the implementation of the Bal-A-Vis-X program, students engage both hemispheres of the brain while activating their bodies for learning. These structured, rhythmic movements support the development of core strength, fine motor coordination, and self-regulation. As these foundational skills improve, academic tasks such as writing, reading, and problem-solving become more accessible and less frustrating. Students become deeply engaged in the activities and often do not realize that previously difficult academic tasks feel easier and more manageable. The program is highly accessible and adaptable. Students quickly learn routines and are able to progress at their own pace, beginning with basic beanbag activities, advancing to controlled ball work, and, for students who are ready, incorporating balance boards. Students who require additional support will have access to modified equipment, such as a sensory tunnel for more severe dysregulation, and increased adult guidance. Strengthening executive functioning through these activities also supports the development of hand strength and fine motor control, which alongside tools such as pencil grips, can lead to improvements in writing stamina, spelling, and overall written expression.

Helena’s Vigilante Parade is a treasured tradition many middle schoolers look forward to joining in high school. This grant launches our own Rookie Vigilante Parade—an inclusive event where every student creates a cardboard float after a large-scale research project based on their learning from the year and local primary/secondary sources. They will fulfill several required standards while creating memories and connections to Helena. Cheered on by other grades and their teachers, students proudly march the halls wearing their final project. Grant funds provide reusable supplies, and a starter supply pile- ensuring this is an event students can look forward to.
Timeline: Entire Year- Local Stories and skill practice
Research project: 3-4 weeks before Vigilante Day
Parade: Near Vigilante Day
Over the course of the year, students study local stories and themes, along with instruction on source validation, evidentiary support and citation. Students will choose a topic for their float and as spring approaches use local resources, such as the Montana Historical Society, in addition to vetted online and written sources, to flesh out and provide historical sources and content for their their ideas. Everything will be noted and cited. This approach builds essential academic skills while fostering connections between classroom content and the cultural heritage of Helena.
The culminating project requires students to apply their research to the design and construction of cardboard floats. They will be timed to culminate in a middle school parade around the high-school vigilante parade. 8th graders will wear their floats and walk through the halls of Helena Middle School. The other classes and staff will line the hallways and watch/cheer for their fellow students, giving them more local history knowledge and an event to look forward to when they hit 8th grade.
Floats will be created with collected cardboard shipping boxes. Students then wear these boxes- picture suspenders on a cardboard box. Materials include durable straps with reinforced grommets, chosen for their ability to withstand repeated fastening and reuse. It includes hooks to attach the straps to the cardboard box. Initial purchases will establish a large initial supply base that can be supplemented annually. Whenever possible, supplies were sourced locally; however, certain heavy-duty and bulk items will be obtained online due to local availability.
Numbers were considered with potential expansion in the future due to district school closings (Hawthorne redistribution) and re-district mapping that could increase the size of our 8th grade class.
This project will increase student motivation, buy-in, community support, school spirit and underclassmen anticipation, expand vigilante day participation and strengthen academic skills.
Motivation is a constant struggle, especially in middle school where motivation and attention spans battle for student attention. Research, validating sources, citations, etc. are not exciting to students. Knowing how historical events relate to each other, identifying elements of change and continuity across historical eras, knowing how Montana has changed over time- all of which are required social study standards- do not make kids more willing to participate in class. Creating a float? Very exciting- while also meeting all of those standards. Conducting a large-scale project with a tangible product and event at the end will improve student investment.
On parade day, the entire school community will celebrate as 8th graders proudly march through the halls, cheered on by other students and staff. Many of our students don’t have the home support we want for them, but this is an event where they can be celebrated and supported by their entire school community.
Materials purchased—such as reusable straps and connectors—will allow us to build a lasting supply base, so the tradition can continue year after year. Giving the underclassmen something to look forward to as well. Unlike the high school parade, where outside resources or peer groups can limit participation, our event ensures that every 8th grader has a place and a role.
Beyond building floats, students strengthen research, source validation, and presentation skills. They connect more deeply with the Helena community and its traditions, while also experiencing the pride of contributing to something larger than themselves. This parade is more than a project; it is an opportunity to foster belonging, creativity, and excitement for learning, while preparing students to embrace the larger Vigilante Parade in the future.

This grant will fund the purchase of a classroom printer, ink, and paper to support my middle school special education students. As school-wide printing budgets continue to decrease, access to printed materials has become limited for students who rely on individualized, hands-on resources. A classroom printer will allow me to provide timely, differentiated instructional materials that support diverse learning needs and IEP goals. This project will ensure students have consistent access to essential printed resources, promoting engagement, independence, and academic progress.
This project will provide a dedicated classroom printer and essential printing supplies to support instruction in a middle school special education setting. Grant funds totaling $500 will be used to purchase a reliable printer, ink cartridges, and paper to ensure consistent access to printed instructional materials for students with diverse learning needs.
The printer will be used to create differentiated assignments, modified assessments, graphic organizers, and supplemental practice materials aligned with students’ IEP goals. Having immediate access to classroom printing will allow for timely adjustments to instruction, ensuring accommodations such as enlarged text, scaffolded supports, and individualized practice are provided without delay.
Project Timeline:
Within the first two weeks of receiving funds, the printer and supplies will be purchased and set up in the classroom. During the remainder of the school year, the printer will be used daily to support instruction and student learning. Materials will be printed as needed to reinforce lessons, provide intervention support, and respond to individual student progress.
By removing barriers created by limited school-wide printing budgets, this project will increase instructional flexibility, promote student engagement, and support academic growth. The funds will directly enhance the learning environment by ensuring students have access to essential printed resources that support hands-on learning and individualized instruction.
This project will improve the student educational experience by providing consistent access to printed instructional materials that support diverse learning needs. Many students with disabilities benefit from hands-on, paper-based learning that reduces screen fatigue and increases focus, comprehension, and retention. Access to printed materials allows students to engage with lessons using strategies such as highlighting, annotating, graphic organizers, and manipulatives that are difficult to replicate digitally.
A classroom printer will also ensure that students receive timely and appropriate IEP accommodations, including modified assignments, enlarged text, scaffolded materials, and individualized practice. When students’ unique learning needs are met, they are more likely to engage actively, build confidence, and demonstrate academic growth.
By removing barriers caused by limited school printing budgets, this project expands opportunities for students to access differentiated instruction, practice essential skills, and make progress toward grade-level standards. Ultimately, this project supports an inclusive learning environment where students feel supported, empowered, and equipped to succeed academically and develop skills necessary for long-term educational success.

This grant will fund the purchase of books and materials to support the use of Novel Effect in the Smith Library. Novel Effect is an innovative iOS-based application that incorporates interactive music and sounds (called “soundscapes”) in real-time response to readalouds; the app actually listens to the sound of the reader’s voice and adds the corresponding effect as you are reading.
Over the last few weeks, I have cross-checked my collection against the master title list on Novel Effect, and I currently have 374 books in my collection with available soundscapes. I am seeking funding to purchase additional titles that are on the Novel Effect title list. I would also use grant monies to purchase the newly available Novel Effect spine stickers that would allow me to add a QR-coded label to all the books in my library with an available soundscape. This would make it very quick and easy to locate books on the shelves to use for library instruction. I already subscribe to Novel Effect (it is an annual subscription that I renew each fall), so I would be able to begin using the new titles and adding the spine label stickers immediately upon receipt.
With a library of over one thousand titles (and more added all the time), the opportunities to use Novel Effect during library readalouds are many. I have used the app for several years with great response from my students. Survey data from Novel Effect subscribers found that 9 in 10 students say books are more engaging and 8 in 10 want to read more when soundscapes are included in readalouds.

This grant will bring a bold new collection of world language books to the school library—stories students recognize, connect with, and love. Funds will purchase high-interest Spanish, Mandarin and Nepali books that support reading in students’ native language while pairing with English editions already in the collection. These shared stories create bridges between languages, helping students build understanding, confidence, and connection through reading. The result is a library that celebrates language, strengthens literacy, and uses storytelling as a powerful force for understanding and belonging.
This project is simple, powerful, and immediate: put high-quality world language books into the hands of the students who need them most.
With grant funding, the school library will purchase a carefully curated collection of Spanish, Mandarin and Nepali books that spark curiosity, reflect students’ lived experiences, and invite meaningful engagement with reading.
All books will be ordered through Mackin, whose guaranteed library binding ensures these titles will withstand years of enthusiastic use in an elementary library. This makes the investment not only impactful now, but sustainable for future multilingual learners.
Multilingual students will play an active role in selecting high-interest titles that reflect the languages and stories of our school community. The timeline is immediate—once funds are awarded, books will be ordered, quickly processed, and made available for checkout within just a few weeks.
This project transforms grant dollars into an enduring, equitable resource—a vibrant world language collection that students can see, hold, and grow with. By expanding the library’s shelves, the school expands opportunity, belonging, and the joy of reading for every multilingual learner who walks through its doors.
Imagine a student walking into the library and, for the first time, seeing a book on the shelf written in the language they speak at home. Their face lights up—not because the book is easier, but because it finally feels like it belongs to them. This project will create more moments like that.
By expanding our world language collection with high-interest, high-quality books, we will open new doors for our English Language Learners and their families. Research shows that when students build strong literacy skills in their home language, those gains directly support English reading success. When we invest in world language books, we are investing in stronger, more confident bilingual readers.
This project also transforms how students interact with one another. By selecting world language editions of books we already own in English, we create opportunities for powerful cross-language conversations—students discussing the same story, each in the language where they feel strongest. These shared experiences build comprehension, vocabulary, and connection across peer groups.
Most importantly, this project tells students: Your language matters here. It affirms identity, builds belonging, and ensures that multilingual learners can see themselves fully reflected in their school library.
By expanding access to engaging, culturally relevant books, this project does more than grow the collection, it expands opportunity, empowers multilingual learners, and builds a more inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive.

This grant will fund an indoor classroom greenhouse for third graders. Funds will be used to purchase an indoor greenhouse shelving unit with grow lights, seed-starting supplies and storage, and seeds native to Montana and/or historically important to Montana tribes. Students will grow plants from seeds as lessons are integrated with reading, science, and IEFA social studies content standards. Students will learn about native Montana plants and plants important to Montana tribes and their traditional uses for food and medicine. Through investigation, students will strengthen science skills, reading skills, environmental stewardship, and cultural understanding while contributing to native plant restoration.
As students study plant life cycles in the spring through our science and reading curriculum, this project will provide a hands-on learning experience creating meaningful connections to classroom instruction. Alongside lessons, students will engage in planting, caring for, and observing seeds as they grow, allowing them to apply learning in a real-world context. The indoor greenhouse and related materials will be used in our classroom. The seeds will all be started in the greenhouse, and the storage bins will be used to keep all materials for reuse in replicating the project in future years.
The project will also incorporate lessons on Montana tribes, focusing on traditional uses of plants for food, medicine, and daily life. Seeds planted will be native to Montana, important to Montana Indigenous tribes, or both. Students will learn about Montana ecology and pollinators while developing skills through plant care.
Seeds will be started indoors at appropriate times based on recommended planting guidelines (e.g., 8–10 weeks before last frost) to ensure successful growth. Students will transplant seedlings outdoors in early June, allowing them to experience the full plant cycle.

This project will provide multiple experiences and learning opportunities for students, in the areas of practical and life-skill gardening, science, reading, and social studies.
Through this project, students will develop practical gardening skills by planting seeds, caring for seedlings, and monitoring plant growth. They will learn how to use seed-starting materials, provide appropriate conditions such as light, water, temperature, and take responsibility for maintaining living plants. They will be able to use these skills and also grow plants from seed on their own.
This projects also connects to our reading curriculum, Into Reading, as it would bring to life the stories “Farmer Will Allen and The Growing Table” and “It’s Our Garden: From Seeds to Harvest in a School Garden.” In his biography, Will Allen teaches community members, children and adults alike, to use greenhouses to grow their own food. Students in “It’s Our Garden” learn about and grow food from seed at school. Our students at Jim Darcy will have the opportunity to learn the same skills. They will be able to use these skills and replicate the project, growing plants from seed on their own.
Students will explore Montana native plants and ecology by studying plant life cycles and the role native species play in supporting pollinators and healthy ecosystems. At the conclusion of this project, students will take the plants they grew home and reintroduce native plants to our ecosystem.
Students will also learn about plants historically important to Montana Indigenous tribes, including traditional uses for food, medicine, and daily life. This instruction helps to build cultural understanding and respect for people and practices in Montana tribes, and awareness of sustainable relationships with the land.

This grant will fund the purchase of 15 cribbage boards for 7th grade math and the school game room. Games encourage students to select good strategies with creative thinking. They build communication skills between students and allow them to reflect with they win or lose. Cribbage ties in skills learned in class as well.
Funds will be used to purchase fifteen cribbage games. This will allow students to play in pairs as most classes have 24-26 students. One game will be given to the game room used for school dances, so students can play there and teach friends. I am probably over-estimating the cost of the games. The range for a nice beginner cribbage board is between 15-20 per set.
Cribbage will be taught specifically as a math lesson helping students understand the rules and math involved in the game. After the lesson is taught, it can be reinforced throughout the year with some fun tournaments. It can also be used on days like Vigilante day when there is less structured time, but the day is still educational.
Cribbage is a natural fit for the 7th grade math curriculum. In a basic sense, students need basic mental math skills of addition and subtraction to play the game. However, because students add to fifteen this is extended to patterns and number sense with combination math . Finally, the game has “skip counting” and sequences as well as assessing probabilities of particular cards left to utilize.
Playing a game in class teaches students to strategize and think critically, but in a fun, engaging manner. Students learn better communication skills by working with a partner or group of three. They also learn some self-reflection skills and analysis of how they won or lost.
Cribbage is also a game that has stood the test of time- so it can connect generations. Students can play with siblings or with friends beyond the classroom.

This grant will fund the purchase of additional frame drums so that every student has one to use during various percussion activities and performances.
The funds would be used to purchased 5 sets of Remo Fiberskyn Frame Drum 3-packs (10, 12, and 14 inches) plus one genuine wood kokoriko to replace the plastic one we currently have. I would purchase immediately upon securing the funds.
There was one a drum and the little one said, “I have one!”
So they all played the drum, and none were left out.
This project serves to increase and equalize the instrument inventory at Bryant School and bring it in-line with the other elementary schools in the district who already have one frame drum per student. Having an instrument for each student increases excitement and engagement, and allows more time per student for developing correct hand technique for the frame drum. We currently have 9, which means we’re bringing drums from others schools, which increases wear and tear to the instruments.

This grant project will fund the purchase of fraction tiles to support hands-on fraction instruction. Students will use fraction bars during whole-group lessons, small-group instruction, and math centers to model, compare, and represent fractions. By actively modeling, comparing, and operating with fractions, students will develop stronger conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.
This project will use grant funds to purchase fraction titles for classroom instruction. The materials will be introduced at the start of the fraction unit and used throughout the school year during whole-group lessons, small-group instruction, and math centers. The timeline includes purchasing materials, introducing them within the first two weeks, and integrating them consistently during fraction instruction and intervention to reinforce learning and improve student outcomes.
This project will improve student experience and learning opportunities by providing hands-on tools that make fractions more accessible and engaging. Using fraction tiles allows students to actively explore and visualize fraction concepts, rather than relying solely on abstract symbols. This supports differentiation, different learning styles, encourages meaningful math discussions, and increases student confidence. Students will have greater opportunities to participate, collaborate, and take ownership of their learning, leading to deeper understanding, improved problem-solving skills, and a more positive attitude toward math. By physically building fractions, students will develop a stronger conceptual understanding of equivalence, ordering, and fraction relationships. The use of concrete manipulatives will increase engagement, help students connect visual models to abstract concepts, leading to improved accuracy, confidence, and overall success in learning fractions.

This grant will fund the purchase of ReMARKable Whiteboard Paint to transform standard classroom student tables into writable, dry-erase surfaces. This project aims to foster immediate collaboration, allow for low-stakes error correction, and increase student engagement during instruction.
I am requesting funds to purchase a ReMARKable Dry Erase Coating kit to transform my classroom’s static student tables into dynamic, writable surfaces. Currently, our traditional desks limit students to individual work on paper, which can often feel permanent and intimidating. By applying this specialized whiteboard coating, I will turn every desk into a collaborative space where students can brainstorm, draft ideas, and solve problems directly on their workspace.
The project will primarily focus on creating a space where it is safe to make mistakes; the ability to erase instantly encourages students to take risks and iterate quickly. This setup also facilitates natural peer-to-peer tutoring, as students can easily share their thinking with neighbors on a shared surface. For my kinesthetic learners, the large-scale physical movement of writing on the tables will significantly increase engagement compared to small-scale pencil-and-paper tasks.
Project Timeline:
Month 1: Purchase the 100 sq. ft. ReMARKable Whiteboard Paint kit and necessary prep supplies (sandpaper, painters tape, and rollers).
Month 1 (Weekend/Break): I will prep the table surfaces and apply the coating. The product requires a 48-hour curing period to ensure a professional, durable finish.
Month 2 and beyond: Immediate implementation into daily routines. These tables will be used every period for small-group instruction, math modeling, and brainstorming sessions.
From a teaching perspective, this project makes formative assessment seamless. I can scan the room and instantly see the “visible thinking” of every student, allowing me to provide immediate feedback. Ultimately, these tables turn a static piece of furniture into a dynamic tool that empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey.
By transforming desks into writable surfaces, students shift from passive observers to active participants, utilizing an “infinite canvas” that encourages low-stakes experimentation and instant error correction. This collaborative setup empowers kinesthetic learners through large-scale physical movement, facilitates simultaneous group problem-solving on a shared surface, and provides me with immediate visual data for formative assessment as I monitor student thinking in real time.

Students in my class are avid readers and I am constantly looking for new texts that will engage, encourage, and challenge them as readers. The novels, The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid and Oliver Twist will provide students the opportunity to explore common themes and plots between a classic novel and its contemporary counterpart.
The funds from this project would be used to purchase two class sets of novels, The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid and Oliver Twist. Once we have the novels we will read and discuss the two books in parallel. Our book club discussions will center around the literary skills we have learned in our core curriculum. This will provide students with an incredible opportunity to reinforce and extend skills in a meaningful and authentic way.
One of the biggest challenges that fourth and fifth grades students face when it comes growing as a reader is finding texts that is engaging and challenging. Developmentally fourth and fifth graders have solid foundational skills and are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn, supporting students through this transition is critical to their continued growth academically. The novels in this project will provide the opportunity for students to engage with their peers in meaningful discussions of the common themes found in these stories and to analyze and think critically about the literary elements utilized by the authors. A secondary goal in selecting these specific novels, is to build students’ fluency and stamina while reading while building on their generative vocabulary skills. Taking literacy skills that we have learned from our core curriculum and helping students apply those skills in meaningful ways sparks student interest and curiosity while fostering a love reading and life long learning.
